Honor Flight: Ground Mission Program
On Saturday, August 5th from 10 am to noon, Honor Flight DFW will honor WWII, Korean War, and Viet Nam veterans with their new Ground Mission program. Honor Flight DFW, known primarily for their two day one night, all expense paid trip to Washington, DC for WWII, Korean War, and Viet Nam veterans, now has the Ground Mission program specifically for veterans who are medically or physically unable to make the trip. At the Ground Mission, attending veterans are honored in many different ways. With close family and friends in attendance, these veterans receive their official Honor Flight shirts, jackets, and hats in an opening ceremony. Led by Gordon Haggett, Ground Mission Director and Viet Nam veteran, the veterans are recognized by name, short “war stories” written by these vets are read aloud, short videos of the WWII, Korean, and Viet Nam memorials in WDC are shown, and a guest speaker addresses the vets. A special “flag ceremony” closes the official ceremony and the veterans then enjoy refreshments with family, friends and the Honor Flight volunteers who run the program.
